The Fear of Man, Monkeys, and Mystery

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Lol.

That’s the usual expression of kids when they go to the zoo, but not mine. I knew those big things were far enough from the fences, and they weren’t the quickest climbers in the zoo. But the one animal that I couldn’t tolerate were the monkeys. . . They are fast, unpredictable little tricksters that scared the daylights out of me!

In the TV One Life episode on fear, people stuck their hands into a covered box with crickets on the inside! I bet it was the creepiest thing! A lot of people started jumping around once they realized that something was on the inside, kind of like how a cricket jumps.

It reminded me of how I used to run away from the fence at the zoo whenever those crazy monkeys went wild. I probably looked like a wild monkey myself!

Whether we’re afraid of crickets, monkeys, or more, fear motivates us to do weird things! Sometimes we can be afraid of the mystery of the future. We try so much to avoid challenges and tests, that we end up not doing God’s will for our lives. Or, we could be so afraid of mistakes that we’ve made in the past, that they can come right back to haunt us.

But, the good news is that God is much greater than our fears. His word says in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and salvation – whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”

With God’s provision and protection, there is nothing to fear in this life. We can overcome fear through the power of God, because He is much greater!

(And now, I don’t even run from the monkeys at the zoo anymore!)
